On December 10, 2024, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced recipients of the 2024 Champions of the Earth, honored for their leadership, brave actions and sustainable solutions to tackle land degradation, drought and desertification.
The annual Champions of the Earth award, the UN’s highest environmental honor, recognizes trailblazers at the forefront of efforts to protect people and planet.
Among the six champions is Madhav Gadgil, an Indian ecologist honored in the Lifetime Achievement category. He has spent decades protecting people and the planet through research and community engagement.
From landmark environmental impact assessments of state and national policies to grassroots environmental engagement, Gadgil’s work has influenced public opinion and official policies on the protection of natural resources. He is renowned for his seminal work in the ecologically fragile Western Ghats region of India.
The other champions who received this award are Sonia Guajajara, Amy Bowers Cordalis, Gabriel Paun, Lu Qi and the organization SEKEM.
