The Gerrard India Bazaar, the oldest and largest Indian market in North America, attracted over 300,000 people to its 21st annual festival this year in Toronto, including the city’s Mayor, Olivia Chow. It was held on the weekend of July 29-30, 2023 and stretched across seven blocks along Gerrard St., the Little India section of the city. The festival was jam-packed with roaring crowds listening to Bollywood music resounding from the speakers while enjoying lots of food and vendors. Originating in the 1970s, Toronto’s Indian bazaar was once the only place to buy Indian groceries in North America. The festival is an incredible platform for showcasing Indian culture, food, and sport to the next generation and non-natives, with over 40 percent of attendees being of non-Indian backgrounds.
