Charlotte’s Blumenthal Performing Arts Center has announced its upcoming 2023 – 2024 season. Lots of Broadway shows, plays, and musicals have been booked, and the lineup was revealed at a media event on March 28, 2023. The season kicks off in the fall 2023 and runs through 2024.

Broadway hits include Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Steven Sondheim’s Company. Other shows are the Broadway revival of Funny Girl, the brand-new, pre-Broadway tour of The Wiz, the film-to-stage comedy adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire, along with favorites like Mamma Mia! and Disney’s The Lion King. Charlotte is one of the first three cities in North America to welcome another film-to-stage adaptation, Back to the Future: the Musical.

Blumenthal President and CEO Tom Gabbard. “We are thrilled to present the largest Broadway season in the region, including several first national tours that won’t be seen anywhere else in the area for some time. Fans from across the Carolinas and Tennessee will have the opportunity to travel to Charlotte for the chance to see these exclusive Broadway shows, further establishing Charlotte as a cultural destination in the region. The local economic impact of this type of tourism will be significant, as we’ve seen with our other major cultural initiatives like Immersive Van Gogh, the Charlotte International Arts Festival, and others.”

Blumenthal also has the regional exclusive on presenting some major shows. Charlotte will be the only place in the Carolinas and surrounding areas this 2023–2024 season to see the productions Company, Back to the Future: the Musical, The Wiz, Message in a Bottle (featuring the music of Sting), and Cookin’.

Also present at the media event were Bree Stallings, Blumenthal’s Director of Artistic Experiences, who spoke about the organization’s outreach to local artists and connecting the visual arts communities with the performing arts communities via a program called Artists In Theater. Season sponsors Jarian Kerekes, Equitable Head of Social Impact & Equitable Foundation, who spoke about the organization’s efforts to work with underserved youth and students at several local high schools and connect them to the arts community, and Weston Andress, PNC Bank Regional President, Western Carolina, which provides early childhood and arts grants, also attended the event.
