Sanskriti Deva Kulshreshtha, a rising senior at NC State University, is now the youngest elected official on the United Nations National Council. She represents the Southeast Region (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico) of the United States. She was elected at age 17 and was recently re-elected for a 2-year term. She led the Global Engagement Summit, which took place in February 2023. She planned the entire conference which was attended by world leaders and also spoke during the conference at UN headquarters in NYC. She was appointed to this committee by the President of the National Council. She is also the Chair of the Nominating committee ensuring elections are fair and there is representation for all and has about a year and a half on her current term. She says, “I will have the honor to continue to represent the interests of my region, chair another Global Engagement Summit, and continue work on issues such as human rights.”
When asked where she heard about the UN Council, she said, “I heard through my work with activism in the Charlotte area, I worked heavily with anti-gentrification and educational accessibility efforts in Charlotte. I was approached by someone who let me know that running for the United Nations is a possibility and they needed more youth. I ran a campaign and was elected.” She was attending NC School of Science and Math when she heard about the program.
Kulshhreshtha is also a winner of Miss Teen India USA international beauty Pageant and is a national award winner of NCWIT women in Technology. She is a Science Fair state level winner and a regular performer in the annual Festivals of India cultural show. She is from Charlotte and is slated to graduate from NC State in 2024.
