The Great Indian Thar is undergoing a remarkable transformation — it is turning green. Over the past two decades, the desert has experienced an astonishing 38 percent increase in greening. Even more striking is the region’s dramatic 64 percent rise in precipitation between 2001 and 2023, despite its traditionally low rainfall. However, it’s not just climate change-induced rainfall that has contributed to this greening; human intervention, including groundwater pumping and irrigation through canals, has also played a crucial role.
