In India, marriage has become big business, with families spending more than ever. In the latest wedding season alone the bill is said to top more than 100 billion dollars with ever more elaborate requirements to celebrate a couple’s big day.
On Foreign Correspondent reporter Meghna Bali travels across India to see how this juggernaut operates – from gold sellers to private detectives; from multi day celebrity weddings to mass weddings with hundreds of couples saying “I do”. But for many families the pressure to spend big is becoming a financial burden as they grapple with the true price of love in India.
Note:
They did make an error in our voiceover at 19:00, they mention, “…Dr Khatri claims one wealthy client spent up to $1400”, it should instead be $14,000, apologies for this error.
