Armaan Malik: A Fresh Musical Voice in Indian Films

Throughout their history, so many film songs have become cultural parameters in India. Certain songs are sure to be heard at weddings, parties, and other traditional Indian functions. The classic songs of Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, among others, the later hits of Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, and Udit Narayan, and contemporary singers like Sonu Nigam are beloved by vast numbers of listeners in South Asia as well as around the world. These are just some of many other iconic singers whose renditions of songs have become soundtracks to the lives of millions.

Vocalist Armaan Malik is one of the brightest young singers in Indian films, both Bollywood as well as other regional cinema. He already has a slew of hits under his belt and is in much demand to record songs for upcoming films. Not quite 21 yet, Malik has already sung nearly 200 commercials and hit songs in over 15 films including Rakta Charitra, Chillar Party, Hero, Do Lafzon Ki Kahani, Bhootnath, Jai Ho and Junooniyat. He and his music composer brother Amal Malik were also featured in the beginning of Salman Khan's film Jai Ho in the song “Love You till the End."

He has also recorded pop tunes and songs for Indian films outside of Bollywood's Hindi universe.

Crooner Armaan Malik is the son of singer and music director Daboo Malik, brother of music director Amaal Malik and nephew of music director Anu Malik. His grandfather was the well-known music figure Sardar Malik. Armaan Malik is performing live with his band in Charlotte on Saturday, November 19. Here's a short email chat with Malik.

You have had a dreamlike beginning and blooming of your singing career. Talk a little about that.

As long as I remember from the age of 4 I knew I wanted to be a singer. Once decided, I moved towards that goal. My parents were with me as my guiding force. My dada Sardar Malik, who is my first guru, and my dad Dabboo Malik were constantly hearing, playing, rehearsing, and composing music. The atmosphere helped me to be connected 24 / 7 with music.

So a quick background info on you. You were launched by Salman Khan?

Before I met Salman Khan I had a grueling musical education and also had to complete my academic education. We did Jai Ho with Salman Khan and our journey began. The film Jai Ho did not meet the desired success but Hero and Main Ho Hero Tera got me recognition and things changed after that. Being the “Voice of Salman" and such at an early age was a blessing for me.

Are you working on any acting opportunities or anything coming up in that direction?

I get a lot of acting offers but my focus is just music. In india, being an actor is the zenith of stardom, but for me it's (all about) music and singing. There is no greater high for me than that. Nothing matters more. But yes if I ever act it will be a huge and biggest musical ever.

Who do you admire in the Indian music world? In both Bollywood and classical Indian music.

I love Sonu Nigam, Chris Brown, Arijit Singh, Michael Bublé, and I'm amazed with the songs and voice of Rafi Sahab and Lataji. I take inspiration from all of them.

Talk about your musical family and their influence on you.

Dada Sardar Malik, Anu uncle and my dad Daboo Malik all have set the legacy for us. We need to work hard to maintain that legacy and it's not easy as we need to reinvent ourselves all the time. My teachers Kadir Mustafa Khan and Rita Kaul ji have been my guiding force and helped me culture my voice.

What can fans in Charlotte expect at your live show? Is there a full band?

I am coming with my full band and there is a huge technical staff and I am blessed to have Deepak Vohra ji giving me full support to get the best team for my show. I will sing all my super hits and of course there will be a song of my fave singers and lots of surprises for you all. Expect the unexpected. I write independent music and I want to represent India in the international market. I hear all international music and I shall be singing a few English songs too in my concert.

Anything else you want to talk about?

I am working on a fusion track which will bring in international collaboration and want to enter the international music soon.
