Dola Re Dandiya Dance Competition - Jan 20 (Chapel Hill)
Saturday, Jan 20, 2018

Dola Re Dandiya is an intercollegiate dance competition that aims to actively entertain the general public and raise cultural awareness of the traditional West Indian dances, Raas and Garba. With multiple teams traveling from across the nation with their best dancers, this competition will prove to be a pioneer in bringing Raas to the Chapel Hill area. The vision of Dola Re Dandiya is to collaborate with other universities in order to increase the awareness of Raas and Garba throughout the nation and to create a unified presence of the Gujarati folk dance. The event takes place on Saturday, January 20 beginning at 6pm at East Chapel Hill High School. All proceeds will be going to a local non profit called MiracleFeet and the Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship. MiracleFeet advocated for the many children who suffer from clubfoot by supporting those born in low income and middle income countries. They partner with local healthcare providers a provide treatment for free or at an extremely low cost. The Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship works under UNC Sangam at UNC Chapel Hill. The goals of the fellowship are to pioneer sustainable approaches to complex social needs in South Asia, to inspire future UNC student awareness of South Asia and its social concern, and to promote the value of education through experience. Each year, the Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship sponsors students to visit a location of their choice, domestic or international, to start a new initiative.
